Witness the Wilderness Just a Few Steps from Your Cabin Door
June 2-11, 2017
Enjoy a week of stunning views and close-up encounters with nature! Captain and ship-owner, Jeff Behrens, and his crew will take every step to ensure an inspiring and luxurious voyage along Alaska’s little-known inlets and bays aboard the Island Spirit.
Join us in Juneau, where we’ll tour Menedelhall Glacier and the Alaska State Museum before boarding the Island Spirit. Our cruise will be guided by the weather and our own whims—if it’s a beautiful day for kayaking, that’s what we’ll do. If we spot a pod of whales, we’ll take our time and enjoy the view! And on this cruise ship, the generators are turned off at night so we can enjoy the distinct sounds of the Alaskan wildlife.
Our first day at sea will be spent cruising north along Alaska’s longest and deepest fjord—the Lynn Canal. We might even enjoy some kayaking in a quiet bay if the weather allows. Regardless, the mountain vistas and the presentation by the onboard naturalist will keep us entertained and inspired. After learning about the wildlife around us, including sea lions, we’ll be treated to the site of Eldred Rock Lighthouse, built in 1906. A cozy night in the village of Haines marks the end of the day.
The next day, we’ll explore Haines, including a museum that boasts a collection of 3,000 hammers of all sizes and types and an exhibit from the Smithsonian Museum. We’ll also stop at the Rehabilitation Museum to learn about local birds, animals, and salmon runs. During the dinner that night, we’ll cruise up to Skagway, where the next day we’ll take a guided tour of this lovely city, including a ride on the historic White Horse Railway.
A Tlingit tribal dance starts the next day off with a taste of native culture. We’ll stroll in the old Icy Straight Point Cannery and visit the local village of Hoonah, where we can enjoy displays of carvings from local native artists.
Early the next morning, we’ll transfer to our exploration vessel for a tour of Glacier Bay National Park, guided by a National Park Service Ranger, and visit the majestic Tidewater Glaciers. After covering more than 140 miles of this sparkling wonderland, we’ll return to the Island Spirit for another delicious meal prepared on board with local ingredients.
After a cruise through ocean waters where whales like to play, we’ll explore a secluded bay, perfect for kayaking and small-boat excursions. Afterward, enjoy a presentation on the cultural heritage of the area, complete with scenes of places you’ll now recognize! Afterward, you’ll be able to enjoy a guided skiff tour with our onboard naturalist.
One more port of call—Sitka, where we’ll enjoy a narrated tour of the Totem Park, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Fortress of the Bears. Do some shopping for Alaskan reminders before coming back aboard for our final evening together before we depart the next morning for home, filled with memories of natural beauty!
